Should you stay, or should you go?

Many therapists start their private practice using platforms like Headway—and that makes sense.

It simplifies insurance, removes billing headaches, and helps fill a caseload quickly.

But there’s a point most clinicians don’t realize they’ve reached…

When staying on a platform like that may actually be costing them money. Here are a few signs it may be time to consider going independent:

• Your caseload is full or close to full

• You’re no longer relying on platform referrals

• You’ve started wondering about your reimbursement rates

• You want more visibility into what’s actually being paid (and why)

• You’re thinking about growing beyond a solo practice

At that stage, the convenience is still there—but so is the tradeoff: less control, limited transparency, and potentially lower reimbursement. Going independent doesn’t mean doing everything yourself. It means having the right systems—and the right support—in place. For many therapists, that’s when their practice truly becomes a business. If you’re unsure whether you’ve reached that point, it’s worth taking a closer look. A short review of your current setup can often reveal more than you’d expect.
